Tshopo Province
Tshopo is one of 25 new provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo specified in the country's 2005 Constitution (effective 18 February 2006).[1] It was to be created from the country's existing 10 provinces within 36 months (18 February 2009).[2] As of October 2010, this had not taken place.[3] It is one of four new provinces to be created from the current Orientale province.
It is situated in the northeast of the country on the Tshopo River, for which it is named.
The capital of the province is the city of Kisangani.[4]
History
From 1963-1966, the area was constituted as the province of Haut-Congo. It was remerged into Orientale, Congo in 1966 as, separately, the district of Tshopo and the city of Kisangani.
